ANNOUNCEMENTS

SCHEDULED NETWORK OUTAGE — On Sunday, June 10, starting at 8 a.m., a network outage will last a maximum of two hours while the Office of Information Technology cuts over to a new fiber circuit and replaces a damaged fiber. External and internal network services will be unavailable for the following locations: Mary Burke East (ResNet and Administrative); Mary Burke West (ResNet and Administrative); Martha Parham East (ResNet and Administrative); Farrah Hall; Foster Auditorium; Little Hall; the Hillel House; Athletics, all areas; Rose Administration Building; the Ancillary Services Building and all other buildings in the facilities and construction administration complex; the SUPe Store at the School of Law; the South Lawn Office Building; the Aquatic Center; and the Institute for Social Science Research.

REMINDER TO UPDATE CONTACT INFORMATION ON UA ALERTS — The University conducted a test of its emergency-notification system, UA Alerts, on June 6. Faculty and staff who did not receive notification vial email, telephone and SMS text messaging should log in to myBama and make changes in the Employee Self-Service area. An individual’s cellphone number should be the primary contact number. Employees who received the alert but would prefer to be contacted differently will need to revise their contact information on myBama.

AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE ON CAMPUS JUNE 10-16Alabama Boys State will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year. Boys State is a leadership program designed to help train young men in the ideals and objectives of American government. Participation in Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to high school seniors. Students from across the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals and motivation in school and community activities.

EXCHANGE 2010 UPGRADE — On June 20, the Office of Information Technology will upgrade UA’s Exchange server to Exchange 2010. For most people on campus, the upgrade will happen behind the scenes without any user interaction or adverse impact. However, because of the variety of operating systems on campus, some users may have to manually change their server information within their mail clients. This is a necessary and overdue upgrade, and further delay will not mitigate the potential complications. Anyone who begins receiving errors when accessing their mail clients on June 20 should click here for detailed instructions for various mail clients. Anyone who continues to have issues should contact the IT Service Desk at itsd@ua.edu or 205-348-5555.

SUMMER FAMILY MAKEOVER — Registration is underway for UA’s annual Summer Family Makeover, a free five-week program designed to help families develop healthy eating and living habits. The event kicks off June 22 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Outdoor Pool Complex. Weekly events and prize drawings will be held throughout the program. For more information or to register, contact the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness at 348-0077 or wellness@ua.edu or visit http://wellness.ua.edu.

K-12 SUMMER PROGRAMS — UA offers a variety of fun and intriguing summer programs for students of all ages. Visit http://k12summer.ua.edu for information about each. Sponsoring divisions include museums, athletics, engineering, music, computer science, community health sciences, journalism, dance, business and human environmental sciences.

MEMORY SCREENING FOR SENIORS — Free memory screenings will be held throughout the summer at Capstone Village for those who wish to participate. Graduate students in UA’s doctoral psychology program are conducting the screenings under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist. People concerned about whether their forgetfulness is normal or possibly an indicator of serious cognitive decline might be interested in undergoing a screening. Each screening is expected to last no longer than one hour. People who are identified with potential memory problems will be referred for a more extensive evaluation. Those who wish to participate should call 205-348-1921 and leave a message, their names, telephone numbers and convenient times to be contacted.

GROUNDS USE PERMITS — People and organizations, both on and off campus, who want to reserve any outdoor space at the University must submit a Grounds Use Permit 10 days prior to the event in order to gain approval for the activity and requested outdoor space. A team of UA professionals will review each request before submitting the request to the assistant vice president of facilities and grounds for final review and approval. After approval, a confirmation letter, along with the GUP, will be sent to the requestor. For complete information and to access the permit, visit the Grounds Use Coordination website. For questions, call Donna McCray, operations manager for facilities and grounds, at 348-6777.

CONSTRUCTION AT FERGUSON CENTER — Construction fences have been placed at three locations around the Ferguson Center for an ongoing expansion project to the East Dining area, Supply Store and Game Room. The work will be done in the evening. For more information, send an email to April Sanders at asanders@sa.ua.edu.

WORTH QUOTING — “Everything we do within our watershed affects water quality, all of the land use within our watershed eventually affects water quality in the lake. Everything washes downstream and we all have a role to play in protecting our drinking water supply.” Mary Pitts, UA geography instructor, as quoted in The Tuscaloosa News.
