ANNOUNCEMENTS

FACULTY AND STAFF PARKING REGISTRATION — Registration for parking permits for 2012-13 will begin Aug. 1. Information will be sent to employees’ UA email accounts and will be available in the Auxiliary Services box on the myBama home page.

DEMOLITION OF ROSE TOWERS — UA’s Rose Towers will be demolished July 4 to make way for a new residence hall to be built near the same site. The building will be imploded at approximately 8 a.m. Jack Warner Parkway, Hackberry Lane and Old Hackberry Lane will be closed in the vicinity of Rose Towers beginning at 6:30 a.m. and are expected to reopen one to two hours after the implosion. Walking trails in the Park at Manderson Landing will also be closed in areas close to the demolition site as will campus-pedestrian traffic. The Black Warrior River will also be closed to boat traffic around the time of the demolition.

A public viewing area will be available in the Riverside East parking lot. Parking will be available in the parking lots around Shelby Hall and at the Campus Drive parking deck. Visitors should take Hackberry Lane from University Boulevard to reach the parking areas.

Visitors should be aware that the implosion will demolish the building in a matter of seconds; however, the atmosphere will be very dusty for 10 to 15 minutes following the implosion. Those with respiratory ailments should take precautions. Click here for complete information.

Devotie Drive — Devotie Drive from University Boulevard to Fourth Street (between the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house and Russell Hall) is closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic through July 2. Contact Ed Sawyer at esawyer@fa.ua.edu with specific concerns about this closure.

Arts Construction Building’s Parking Area — The parking area for the Arts Construction Building (old plumbing shop) is closed through July 13 for demolition of the Arts Construction Building located at 340 Stadium Drive behind Rowand-Johnson Hall.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE — The University’s normal business operations will be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Normal business operations will resume on July 5. For guidelines on how to compensate employees who are required to work during the period when normal operations are ceased, employees should refer to HR Policy 601 or call the Department of Human Resources at 348-6690 or the Payroll Office at 348-7732.

SEAT-BELT USE — UA’s Office of Risk Management reminds operators of vehicles owned or leased by the University that Chapter 32-5B of the Code of Alabama 1975, as amended, and UA policy require occupants of vehicles to wear seat belts.

FACULTY-STAFF LUNCH SPECIALBama Dining is offering $5 lunches at Fresh Food Co. for all UA faculty and staff every Tuesday and Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., through Aug. 2. Fresh Food Co. is located in the Ferguson Center.

TOBACCO-FREE CHALLENGE – The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness announces the 2012 Summer Tobacco-Free Challenge, designed to help faculty and staff give up tobacco. Beginning July 11, group sessions will be held from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. each week through the month of July at the University Medical Center. This program provides participants with helpful tools and resources, including supportive educational sessions and tobacco-cessation-medication options available through health-care providers. Survey – UA’s Center for Veteran and Military Affairs is asking faculty and staff who are currently involved or previously involved in the military to complete a quick survey. Click here to access the survey.

Honor Walk — The VMA Honor Walk is a way for individuals to support scholarships at the University for active-duty military, veterans, dependents of military personnel and spouses of military personnel. Brick pavers for the Honor Walk will be located in front of the Center for Veteran and Military Affairs in B.B. Comer Hall and engraved in the fall of 2012. More information, including how to order a paver, is found at the lower right side of the CVMA website at http://vets.ua.edu.

SUBMISSIONS SOUGHT FOR BROWN BAG LECTURE SERIES — The Women’s Resource Center and the women’s studies program within the department of gender and race studies are offering their first-ever call for proposals for the Feminism Spoken Here Brown Bag Lecture Series that will begin in the fall of 2012. The lecture committee seeks submissions that focus on gender-related scholarship and praxis with a feminist focus. All members of the campus and community are eligible to submit. CONTEST FOR AMERICA’S FAVORITE PARK — UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park is among the current vote getters in a national contest to determine America’s favorite park.
