Logistics and Support Services Keep Things Moving
April 16th, 2012 - Filed under: Connections
Whether it’s mail going from one department to another, new furniture being moved into an office, used items headed for surplus property, or discarded items sent to be recycled, one area keeps it all moving – logistics and support services.
The departments within this area include the following:
• campus mail
• central receiving
• garage services
• customer service center
• logistical support
• property and inventory
Within the office of property and inventory is the surplus property office.
The mission of logistics and support services is “to add value to the University by managing fixed assets and surplus property, and by providing excellent customer service while delivering essential logistical, mail, receiving and recycling services.”
How does this translate into workday terms? According to Tony Johnson, executive director of the area, it means the staff is ready to help departments across campus with requests as diverse as setting up for special events, adding recycling containers, moving equipment or warehousing essential University property.
“We work all over campus, and would like employees to call on us whenever needed. We are here to help.” The best way to do that, Johnson said, is to submit a work order through the customer service center, formerly known as the service response center.
Requests can be sent to the employee’s building representative, who will submit the work order using the online FMAX work order system. (Employees can find a list of building representatives at uafacilities.ua.edu/buildings/bldgreps.htm.)
The customer service center approves all work requests; upon approval the system routes the request to the appropriate facilities shop department. Work orders for logistical support are executed by Johnson’s area. As the hub for all repair, maintenance and logistical support the customer service center streamlines the work order process.
Logistics and support services is located at the Ancillary Services Building on 14th Street.
