TIPS FOR GIVING EXAMS IN ELEARNING — UA’s Faculty Resource Center offers the following tips to help faculty and their students have a successful exam experience in eLearning.
- Extend the time period in which the exam is available.
- Stagger the times at which students begin the exam so that an entire class does not begin simultaneously.
- Choose exam start times that are not exactly on the hour or half hour.
- Make a contingency plan in case of technical or other difficulties with the online exam and decide at what point to implement it.
- Ask students to be patient. Like many other online tools, when eLearning is busy, the system can get confused if users click repeatedly. Give the system several seconds to respond to a click.
Contact the eLearning team at 205-348-3532 or elearning@ua.edu for more information.
COMMENCEMENT — UA will hold commencement ceremonies May 4 and 5 in Coleman Coliseum to award degrees to its spring graduates. Commencement exercises for students in the colleges of Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Human Environmental Sciences and Nursing will be at 6 p.m., Friday, May 4. UA ALERTS TEST CANCELLED — The University will not test UA Alerts on Wednesday, May 2, because students will be taking final examinations. UA Alerts is the University of Alabama’s emergency communication system. The system is normally tested on the first Wednesday of each month. In the event of a campus emergency, the system sends notifications via email, telephone and SMS text messaging to contact information on file in student and employee records. Employees can update their records by logging on to myBama and making changes in the Employee Self-Service area. More information: http://prepare.ua.edu.
OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL AWARD — Winners of the Outstanding Professional Award will be announced at a program and reception May 15 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Bibb Graves Hall. WORTH QUOTING — “If you’re a voter in New Hampshire, you get to meet every candidate. That’s just not fair.” Dr. Richard Fording, UA professor of political science, as quoted in The Anniston Star in an article about trends in electoral politics. One recent trend is “frontloading” — the rush among states, including Alabama, to set their primary dates earlier in hopes that their voters will become as powerful as the voters in the early states.
