Fall Issue of Alabama Heritage Available Now
October 18th, 2010 - Filed under: News
The Fall 2010 issue of Alabama Heritage magazine showcases a brave but roguish Confederate cavalry officer, unearths the contents of a century-old time capsule, celebrates the sacrifices of a civil rights martyr and draws attention to historic sites in need of preservation.
In this issue, historian Zack C. Waters traces the life and exploits of Colonel Harry Maury, who led a Confederate cavalry regiment in rooting out and punishing those deemed dangerous and disloyal along the Gulf Coast during the Civil War. His heroic zealousness was countered by fiery impulsiveness and a penchant for strong drink, leaving a mixed legacy in its wake.
John Hall details how one generation commemorated its progress in a unique way, preserving lessons and artifacts for future generations. He recounts the origins of the time capsule created and placed during the construction of Smith Hall on campus. Although some relics took historical sleuthing to decipher, the capsule’s contents offer a valuable record of life in a different era.
Mary Stanton recounts the life of Viola Liuzzo, who made a fateful decision to leave her home and family in Michigan to join the 1965 marches in Selma. Liuzzo’s murder evoked a wide range of responses from nearly every corner of American culture, and Stanton sorts through the reaction to show why her death attracted so much attention — both positive and negative — nationwide.
This issue also includes the annual listing of “Places in Peril” — sites and structures throughout the state in desperate need of preservation. Among sites selected by the Alabama Historical Commission and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation are a train depot, cotton mills, historic homes, a cemetery, a theater, a farm, the Federal Road, and wooden windows statewide.
Alabama Heritage is co-published by UA, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The quarterly magazine covers a variety of subjects related to Alabama history and culture and has garnered numerous local, regional and national awards over the years. Copies are available for purchase at the Supply Store and online at www.alabamaheritage.com.
