DONATIONS ACCEPTED FOR HAITI RELIEF EFFORT — The UA Community Service Center will collect donations for the Haiti relief effort at the Ferguson Student Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Jan. 29. UPDATE YOUR LOCAL MAILING ADDRESS FOR W-2 FORMS — Faculty and staff W-2 forms will be mailed to local mailing addresses by Jan. 31. By Jan. 22, please confirm that your local mailing address is correct by logging in to the Banner Self-Service feature found on myBama. For step-by-step instructions, click here. If you have questions, call the Human Resources Service Center at 348-7732.
COMMITTEE PREFERENCE SURVEY AVAILABLE ONLINE — The Committee on University Committees is conducting its annual Committee Preference Survey for full-time faculty and staff interested in serving on UA standing committees. Term of service begins in August. The survey is available through Feb. 1. All faculty and staff are encouraged to respond to the survey, which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/cucsurvey. The Committee on University Committees uses the results of the survey to select new members for the standing committees. Persons who want to serve on a standing committee are asked to complete the survey. Current committee members whose terms do not expire this year and who desire to continue serving do not need to complete the survey. Current committee members who wish to be removed prior to completion of their terms are asked to complete the survey and select “Please remove” for that committee. Information regarding the standing committees, including current members and terms, can be found at http://committees.ua.edu.
NOMINATIONS ACCEPTED FOR BUFORD PEACE AWARD — The School of Social Work is accepting nominations for the Buford Peace Award. The Buford Peace Award is granted annually to a UA faculty member who in his or her teaching, research, practice and professional life has demonstrated exceptional levels of involvement in mediating human disputes, helping overcome prejudice, promoting justice and establishing peace. The recipient will receive $1,000 and will be recognized at a ceremony in the spring. Faculty members from every division are eligible. NOMINATIONS ACCEPTED FOR ACADEMIC ADVISOR EXCELLENCE AWARD — UA’s Academic Advisors Association is accepting nominations for the Academic Advisor Excellence Award. Faculty, staff and students may nominate advisors. Contact Julia Griffith (jgriffith@as.ua.edu or 348-5970) to receive a nomination form or for more information. The deadline for submitting nominations is March 5.
BLACKBURN INSTITUTE ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS UNTIL JAN. 27 — UA’s Blackburn Institute is accepting nominations for 2010-11 new Fellows. All UA faculty, deans, directors and student affairs staff members may nominate students for potential selection into the Institute. The Blackburn Institute is seeking students with excellent leadership qualities who are interested in making a difference in Alabama and their communities. The Institute accepts students during all stages of their academic career, including graduate and law students. The only prerequisite for membership is that the nominated student be a full-time student during the 2010-11 academic year. An e-mail with instructions and the nomination form was sent on Jan. 6. CREATIVE WRITING CLUB ACCEPTING ENROLLMENT — The UA Creative Writing Club, for students from grades 9 to 12, is accepting enrollment for spring. The club will meet on Wednesday afternoons, Jan. 27-April 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the UA campus in 301 Morgan Hall. The teachers, all published writers who are graduate students in the University’s MFA program, will lead an exploration of creative writing under the direction of poet and professor Robin Behn. Students will experiment with writing in many forms, give public readings and create their own publication by the end of the term. No previous experience in creative writing is required, and participation is free. RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY CONFERENCE SEEKS UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS — Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 15 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their work before judges. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 8. WEIGHT WATCHERS AT WORK BEGINS NEW SERIES — Weight Watchers at Work will hold an open house on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 12:15 p.m. in the library of Jones Hall. A new series will begin on Feb. 4 and end May 20. The cost is $150. Payment options are available. Meetings are held every Thursday at 12:15 p.m. in Jones Hall.
