ANNOUNCEMENTS
H1N1 INJECTABLE FLU VACCINE AVAILABLE – The College of Community Health Sciences has ordered from the Alabama Department of Public Health approximately 18,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. This vaccine is being shipped in small quantities. Currently, 30 doses of the H1N1 injectable vaccine for ages 6 months to 35 months are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Faculty-Staff Clinic at the University Medical Center for persons who are interested. The clinic is open 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
As the College of Community Health Sciences receives shipments, announcements will be sent to notify the campus community.
CCHS will follow the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Alabama Department of Public Health for priority immunization. The following “special groups” are recommended as top priority for 2009 H1N1 vaccine:
- children 5 through 18 years of age with chronic medical conditions (e.g., asthma and neurological disorders); details about conditions that increase a child’s risk for complications from the flu can be found at www.aap.org/new/H1N1pdf.htm
- household contacts of infants under 6 months of age
- health care workers and emergency services personnel who provide direct patient care or have contact with infectious substances
- all children 6 months through 4 years of age
- pregnant women
Like other flu viruses, H1N1 spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing and sometimes through touching objects contaminated with the virus.
The College of Community Health Sciences provides the following reminders on basic prevention measures for any virus:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.

SECURING PERSONAL BELONGINGS AT TAILGATE LOCATIONS — Many fans who tailgate on the Quad or other campus areas leave personal belongings at their tailgate locations while they attend the game and do not retrieve those items until after the game has concluded or until the next day. Please be advised that it is the owners’ obligation to secure their personal belongings during the time they are away from their tailgate locations. The University does not assume any responsibility for guarding or protecting personal items from theft or other calamity while their owners are at the game or until they return to their tailgate sites to collect those items. Any items not collected by their owners by noon on the day after a game will be considered abandoned and subject to collection by the University. Owners should make sure they properly secure their personal belongings.
PARKING AND TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS — The following lots and areas must be vacated by 5 p.m. today as well as all Fridays of home football games: Colonial Drive, south of Eighth Street; the Coleman Coliseum lot; the Bryant Drive lot; the Tutwiler “triangle” lot; the lower Student Recreation Center lot; and the Softball Stadium lot. The University Medical Center lots must be vacated by 6 p.m. on Fridays of game-day weekends. Visit http://www.bamaparking.ua.edu/pages/announcement.html for detailed information about alternative parking.
GAME-DAY RECYCLING — Fans attending Quad events prior to each home football game are encouraged to drop off game-day recyclables at a tent east of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Plastic, aluminum and cardboard will be accepted at the tent, staffed by employees from UA’s logistics and support services department. UA employees and SGA volunteers will hand out recycling bags to individual groups tailgating on the Quad so that cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic cups, food wrappers and other types of plastics, including ice bags, can be recycled.

The women’s team will host its first “Power of Pink” breast cancer awareness event and admission is free.
