ANNOUNCEMENTS

FLU INFORMATION - One case of H1N1 virus (swine flu) has been confirmed on the UA campus. The Centers for Disease Control and the Alabama Department of Public Health are now recommending that H1N1 virus be treated like other types of seasonal flu.

The University Medical Center provides the following reminders on basic infection control measures for any virus:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
    Clean and sterilize contaminated surfaces.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them for a period of seven days after becoming ill. Patients experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, should call their health care provider.

For more information on H1N1 (swine) flu, visit http://prepare.ua.edu/?page_id=2022 or http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.

PAVING AND NEW PARKING DESIGNATIONS AROUND ROSE ADMINISTRATION - Parking areas surrounding Rose Administration Building are closed for extensive paving work, which is expected to be complete by June 26. Faculty and staff with reserve permits for the Rose Administration parking lot can access the back of the parking area via Eighth Street (south of Harris Hall) and through the back gate, which will be left open. Tickets will be issued to those who park in the Rose Administration lot without the appropriate permit. Also, visitor parking has been relocated from the front circle of Rose Administration to Colonial Drive. Visitors, faculty and staff can park in the area until paving has been completed.

After the repaving, parking spaces on the east side of the building will be designated for one-hour parking, and spaces on the west side will be designated for handicapped parking, state car parking and business-permit parking. The spaces in the front circle will remain 30-minute timed parking.

CAMPUS PAVING PROJECTS – Campus Drive from the intersection of McCorvey Drive east to the Ridgecrest South construction entrance will be closed June 27 and 28 for paving repairs.

The Ferguson Parking Lot will be partially closed June 29-July 2. One half of the lot will be accessible for parking at all times.

Hackberry Lane from the Biology Building to the intersection of Campus Drive will be closed July 3-6.

Old Hackberry Lane adjacent to Riverside Residence Hall will be closed July 8-12 for extensive paving repairs.

“OUR STUDENTS. OUR FUTURE.” CAMPAIGN CELEBRATION – Faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the success of the University’s “Our Students. Our Future.” capital campaign on Tuesday, June 30. The conclusion of the campaign will be marked with a Denny Chimes concert beginning at 4 p.m. Soft drinks and ice cream will be available around Denny Chimes. The largest and most successful campaign in the University’s history has surpassed its $500 million goal by raising more than $595 million since 2002. Faculty and staff have contributed more than $11.6 million to the campaign for student scholarships, faculty support, campus facilities and priority needs.

WORTH QUOTING – “At this point they are sponges and eager to learn. But they are not at this point huge users yet. They don’t drive or date, so it is easier to learn to meet and set goals.” Jan Brakefield, assistant professor of consumer sciences and director of Camp Cash at UA, as quoted in a Tuscaloosa News article on Camp Cash, a summer day camp that teaches middle school students about financial responsibility.
